FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Sunday, May 1, 2011, First Midwest Bank will host the fourth annual Southwest Half Marathon. Up to 2,500 participants will wind through neighboring Palos Park and the Cook County Forest Preserves before returning to Palos Heights to cross the finish line.
The inaugural Southwest Half Marathon, held in 2008, earned a Governors Home Town Award for the City of Palos Heights. After two highly successful encores in 2009 and 2010, the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) has recognized the 2011 Southwest Half Marathon as a “Runners Choice” Circuit Race. CARA Runners Choice races are evaluated with strict scrutiny by the CARA Road Race Services staff before and during the race and require acknowledgement by the USA Track & Field Association as well as glowing evaluations from runners post-race.
According to Mel Diab, Race Director and owner of Running for Kicks, a running shoe and apparel store located in Palos Heights, the Southwest Half Marathon has all the elements runners could want in a race. From a flat course and beautiful scenery to quality entertainment and outstanding community support, the Southwest Half Marathon is poised to surpass its 2010 total of nearly 1,800 runners. In addition to the 13.1 mile half marathon, a half-mile Walk, Run or Roll race will be held for children and adults with special needs.
While First Midwest Bank is the2011 title sponsor and Nike has signed on as the official shoe and apparel sponsor, a limited number of corporate and community sponsorships are available to businesses and civic organizations. Proceeds of the event will benefit the American Cancer Society for Prostate Cancer and Research, The South West Special Recreation Association and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The generosity of sponsors, runners and the many volunteers who assist on race day has enabled previous Southwest Half Marathons to raise more than $60,000 for these charities in just three years.
